Proyecto SPREEX
We will be attending next Thursday’s and Friday’s SPREEX Workshop in Madrid, representing our partners at True Heading.
The SPREEX (SPILL RESPONSE EXPERIENCE) project is an initiative that pretends to research the technological requirements and active coordination solutions able to help the authorities giving a quick and accurate response to oil spillovers from ships.
This initiative was born after the terrible accidents that have taken place in the european coastline lately, producing catastrophic ecological consequences.

Blogueando desde Joost
We’re blogging from Joost, what we believe will be the TV of the future.
We are watching the documentary you can access by clicking below, about fishermen in Africa, and their traditional fishing methods.
There is little content in Joost so far, but it has been steadily increasing since we started testing it, so we are sure we will be able to find more and more interesting marine content.
We have tons of invitations to anyone willing to try it out, so if that is the case, drop us a line. Check the contact link to do so.

Un ole a Canarias
The Canary Islands become a pioneer region within Europe as far as AIS is concerned, by creating an AIS network able to control maritime traffic in a wide coverage area. You can check this link for more info (in spanish). It is a project developed by our partners at GMV.

We believe it is a great pioneering initiative, and only the start of a series of similar projects.
Dos tipos de geeks
For those of us used to reading technology blogs, it is not unusual reading the word ‘geek ‘. We found the best definition of it in the microsiervos’ blog , one of the most visited technology ones in Spain:
A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia. Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves — and some who are in fact hackers normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard ‘hacker’ as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than self-assumed.

You can find the rest of the definition here.
Since we, as passionate about technology, started getting deeper into our beloved nautical segment, we’ve been discovering individuals with formidable technological skills. We believe it makes sense to say that boaters have been the real geeks for centuries.
If we think about it carefully, sailors worldwide often had to get mechanical and electronic devices repaired with hardly any resources in very extreme situations. They also learned to maximize the potential of radio frequencies to communicate with one another, or learned to use old-fashioned devices to locate themselves in the middle of the ocean.
Then, after the more traditional boaters, WWW and usable GSM facilitated the entrance of newcomers in the geek world. Newcomers are nevertheless more used to software than hardware.
We are very happy to develop a project where both worlds are perfectly compatible!!
